The Difference Between Moving On and Moving Forward

A Message for you

Have you ever been told to “just move on? Whether it was after a breakup, a failure, or a major life disappointment-those words can feel so frustrating. Because it’s not always that simple. Moving on can feel like you’re being told to completely forget, stop caring, or act like it never happened in the first place. But the truth is, there’s a big difference between moving on and moving forward.

Message of the day:

1. Moving On Feels Like Erasing the Past

When people say “move on,” it often feels like they’re telling you to forget about what happened, or let go of it completely. But you and I both know that healing doesn’t work that way. You can’t just flip a switch and stop caring about someone or something that meant a lot to you. That job you lost, relationship that ended, or dream that didn’t seem to work out-it mattered. And if it’s still on your mind that’s okay too…

Moving on implies cutting ties completely with the past, like it shouldn’t affect you anymore. But some experiences are left with us forever. Regardless, that doesn’t mean you’re stuck or held back from it, you’re simply human.

2. Moving Forward Honors What You’ve Been Through

Moving forward is different from moving on. It doesn’t imply forgetting, but rather choosing to grow. It means taking the lessons with you, but not letting the pain define you. You can still miss whatever it was, and you can still think about it sometimes, but still choose to move forward with your life. Something you might be struggling with when moving forward is the belief that this “thing” is making you feel stuck or is holding you back because of the thoughts and emotions connected to it. However, despite the intense emotions tied with it, you can still choose to move forward, and look at it as more of a defining moment along your journey.

This mindset shift is so powerful. Instead of trying to erase the past completely, you integrate it into your future. You choose to let your past experiences make you wiser, stronger, and more intentional moving forward. You carry it, not as baggage, but as an important part of your story.

3. You’re Not Weak for Still Feeling This Way

There’s this false belief associated with healing and that it means to never be affected again. And that if you’re still hurting, you must not have moved on. But I don’t believe that’s true. Healing comes in layers. You might feel perfectly fine one week, and then be emotional the next, but this doesn’t mean you’ve failed or you’re not “healed.” It simply means you’re processing. And even that means progress.

You’re allowed to still feel this way and to still care. It doesn’t mean you’re stuck where you were months ago, but that you’re simply human. Like I said previously everything comes in layers, all the emotions come and go over and over until you’ll never relapse with negative emotions again. It’ll all come in time, so don’t beat yourself down for feeling this way still. You’re making progress day in and day out, you just got to keep moving forward.

4. How to Start Moving Forward (Without Forcing Yourself to “Move On”)

If you’re struggling to move forward, here are some practical steps that could help you in your journey:

  • Give yourself permission to grieve. Don’t rush your process. You’re allowed to sit with what you’ve lost before you take your next steps.

  • Find meaning in the pain. Reflect upon your situation and try to understand what you can learn from the experience, as I believe that the hardest experiences can teach you the biggest life lessons.

  • Make small steps forward. You don’t have to take that huge leap. Just showing up each day marks a step forward. One day at a time.

  • Redefine progress. Progress isn’t about forgetting. It’s about living your life with the lessons in your heart-not the pain on your back.

Main Takeaways: You’re Allowed to Carry the Past Without Being Held Back by it.

You don’t have to pretend like you’re over it. You don’t have to erase what happened. Moving forward is all about acceptance. You can carry the memory and still chase your future. You can still feel and still grow.

So if someone tell you to “just move on,” remind yourself that you don’t need to move on to heal, but rather to keep moving forward.

You’re doing better than you think, and I’m proud of you.
