Self Control

You need self control. not a frank ocean reference.

Have you ever found yourself choosing the easy way out, even when you know it’s not the right thing to do? Self-control isn’t just about saying “no” to temptations, but is about choosing delayed gratification for long term goal rather than short term pleasures. But why does it feel so hard to be disciplined when it matters most? Let’s break it down.

Message of the day:

1. The Battle of Self-Control

Self-control-no, no, no, not the song by Frank Ocean. I’ve been struggling with it lately, and if you can relate at all to me, you probably know what it feels like to constantly battle the temptations around you. It’s frustrating when you set big goals and have intentions of achieving them, but then you end up veering off track because of the distractions around you. I wanted to fig deeper into why self-control matters and how you can actually strengthen it.

The truth is, self control is essential in our lives, as it helps us in decision making in order to avoid the negative consequences. It’s all about resisting temptations, staying focused on goals, and managing emotions effectively. Without self control, we risk acting purely on impulse and more times than most feeling a sting of regret later on. I personally know exactly what this feels like, choosing a night out over studying, only to feel like crap the next day when my grades take a hit. That guilt? It’s worse than the momentary discomfort of saying “no” to distractions.

2. Why Self-Control Feels So Hard

Self-control isn’t just about having willpower. It’s about understanding why we give in to impulses in the first place. Most of the time, it’s not that we are lazy or unmotivated, but rather we are avoiding discomfort. Whether it’s stress, boredom, or frustration, we always seek instant gratification in order to help alleviate the feeling. But here’s the truth: avoiding discomfort only make it worse in the long run. The real harm comes from living with regrets and knowing that you could’ve done better.

So how do we combat this feeling? Well by first understanding it, we then are able to take the necessary steps in order to get over it. Instead of trying to “power through” every challenge, recognize what the triggers are that make you lose control. Maybe it’s something you heard, or something you saw, once you identify what causes you to
“lost control” you are then able to confront it head-on. Being aware of it, makes it a lot easier to make conscious choices instead of just reacting to what is happening to you.

3. Building Self-Control (Practical Steps)

Now that we get why self-control is so hard, how do we actually build it? Well I’ve mapped out 4 practical ways you can do so:

  • Set Clear Goals: Know exactly what you’re working toward and why it matters. Write it down, make it as specific as possible, and remind yourself of it daily.

  • Avoid Temptations: Once you have identified the things that are triggering you, try to do your best to minimize your exposure to these things. Don’t keep your distractions so close to you.

  • Practice Mindfulness: Tune into your thoughts without any feelings or judgment. I recommend journaling and/or meditating in order to notice all your impulses and cravings.

  • Build Good Habits: Self-control also known as discipline is like a muscle. The more you train it, the stronger it gets. Start with the small wins and over time build the confidence to take on bigger challenges.

4. Reframing the Struggle

Instead of seeing self-control as a battle against yourself, view it as a process of growth. It’s not about being perfect, but rather about making micro good decisions, that will intentionally add up over time. You’re not weak for struggling and giving in to temptation; you’re human. Progress comes from acknowledging your flaws and doing your best to work through them. One step at a time, and you will get through it.

Main Takeaways: You vs You

At the end of the day, self-control is about mastering your own mind. Don’t fight yourself for giving into temptation, but rather learn from it and move forward. Your goal shouldn’t be to live a perfect life, but to better than you were yesterday. Perfection doesn’t exist so stop seeking it. It’s the battle of you vs you. Choose the better version of yourself that seeks delayed gratification rather than the short term comfort.

As always, I’m wishing you nothing but the best.

P.S. I know some of you were not able to receive our movie clip pack, so if you’ve read this far, here’s a link to it. :)

Hope you enjoy!
