Letting Go Is Hard, Be Easy On Yourself
a message for you.
Letting go isn’t a clean cut. It’s rarely a single moment where you decide to move on and everything magically feels lighter. More often, it’s a slow unraveling — a tug-of-war between your head and your heart. You might have days where you feel free, convinced you’ve turned a corner, only to have the memories pull you back into their orbit. Whether it’s a person, a dream, or a version of yourself you’ve outgrown, releasing it can feel like losing a piece of who you are.
But here’s the truth: healing is not a straight line. You will take steps forward, stumble back, and take them forward again. This is not failure — it’s the natural rhythm of moving through loss. The last thing you need in this process is your own harsh judgment. If you’re going to make it to the other side, you have to be gentle with yourself in a way you maybe never have before.

1. Letting go doesn’t mean forgetting
Too often we think that moving on requires wiping the slate clean — pretending it never happened, forcing ourselves to bury every trace of what once mattered. But you don’t have to erase the good moments to move forward. Those memories were real, they shaped you, and they will always be a part of your story.
Letting go simply means you’ve made peace with the fact that the chapter is over. You’re not denying that it existed, you’re just acknowledging that it can’t continue in the same way. There’s no shame in holding a place in your heart for what’s gone — as long as you’re not holding yourself back from what’s ahead.
The past can be a teacher, not a prison. You can carry the lessons without carrying the weight.
2. Your pace is your pace
We live in a world that pressures us to “bounce back” quickly, as if healing has an expiration date. But the truth is, there is no universal timeline for moving on. Some people may find closure in weeks. Others may take months or years. The speed doesn’t determine the strength.
Some days you’ll feel solid, like you’ve finally stepped into a new chapter. Then, without warning, something as small as a song or a scent will take you right back. That’s not proof that you’re stuck — it’s proof that you’re human. Healing is not about eliminating every pang of pain; it’s about learning how to live with it without letting it control you.
Give yourself the patience you’d give a friend. If you wouldn’t rush them, why rush yourself?
3. Self-kindness is not optional
We’re often our own worst critics during heartbreak or loss. We tell ourselves things like “I should be over this by now” or “Why am I still feeling this way?” But piling guilt on top of grief only makes the load heavier. If you truly want to heal, you have to replace self-criticism with self-compassion.
Self-kindness isn’t about excusing unhealthy patterns or avoiding reality — it’s about creating a safe space within yourself to process what’s happened. It’s choosing to speak to yourself the way you would to someone you deeply care about. That softness gives your heart permission to mend at its own pace, and it’s often the thing that allows you to finally release what’s been holding you back.
4. Practical Ways to Be Gentle With Yourself
Write down one small win from your day — even if it’s just getting out of bed.
Allow yourself to feel without rushing to “fix” it. Sit with the sadness when it comes.
Avoid comparing your process to someone else’s story — healing is deeply personal.
Prioritize small acts of care: a walk outside, your favorite meal, a phone call with someone who listens.
Remind yourself daily: I am allowed to take my time.

Closing:
Letting go will always be hard — there’s no shortcut, no trick to skip the ache. But it becomes lighter when you stop battling yourself along the way. You don’t have to rush. You don’t have to “get over it” in record time. You just have to keep choosing, little by little, to loosen your grip on what’s gone so your hands are free to receive what’s next.
Be patient. Be gentle. One day you’ll look back and realize you weren’t losing — you were making room.
As always, I wish you nothing but the best.
Sincerely,
Michael aka Themindsetmagnet
